Storm + Sue Bird

Chapter I | The Legacy of Sue Bird
Sue Bird is one of the greatest to ever play the game.

A four-time WNBA champion. A five-time Olympic gold medalist. A leader whose impact on basketball extends far beyond statistics and accolades.

For more than two decades, she defined excellence at the highest level. Her vision, composure, and ability to control the game made her the foundation of a Seattle Storm dynasty.

But what truly sets Sue apart is her influence beyond the court.

She helped elevate the game. Inspired generations of athletes. And became a symbol of leadership, consistency, and greatness in women’s sports.

In Seattle, Sue Bird is not just a champion.

She is part of the city’s identity.

Chapter II | The Moment
To honor that legacy, the Seattle Storm unveiled a statue of Sue Bird outside Climate Pledge Arena.

A permanent tribute.

A moment that cemented her place not only in basketball history, but in the city she helped define.

The same day, inside the arena, fans gathered to celebrate everything Sue had accomplished.

It was more than a ceremony.

It was a moment of recognition for a career that changed the game.

And it created the perfect opportunity to commemorate the occasion through art.
Chapter III | The Artwork
For this project, the focus was clear.

Capture Sue in the moment that defined her.

The iconic layup pose. The same motion that became her logo.

A position that reflects everything she represented as a player. Control, precision, and confidence in the biggest moments.

Working in graphite, the goal was to create something timeless.

Not just a portrait, but a symbol.

A piece that could stand alongside the statue as another way to preserve her legacy.
Chapter IV | 7,500 Moments
That night, as fans filled the arena, 7,500 prints of the artwork were distributed throughout the crowd.

Each one placed directly into the hands of the people who had witnessed her career, game after game, season after season.

The scale of it was incredible.

Thousands of fans holding the same image at the same time. A shared moment of appreciation and celebration.

What made it even more powerful was the timing.

Outside, her statue stood as a permanent tribute.

Inside, the artwork gave fans something they could take with them.

A connection to the moment. A piece of history they could hold.

This hyper-realistic pencil drawing captures Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird in her most iconic pose: soaring toward the hoop for a layup. Every detail is meticulously rendered: the texture of her jersey, the motion of her body midair, and the unmistakable number 10 on her back. Her ponytail whips behind her, amplifying the sense of speed and grace, while the packed arena rises in the background, frozen in a moment of collective awe.

The black-and-white medium heightens the drama, spotlighting Sue as both athlete and icon. The precision with graphite transforms this action shot into something timeless, and a homage to Bird’s legacy and the electricity she brought to Seattle basketball.

Chapter V | A City’s Tribute
Sue Bird’s legacy is built on consistency, leadership, and excellence at the highest level.

But in Seattle, it is something even more than that.

It is connection.

To the fans. To the city. To the generations of players who will follow in her footsteps.

This project became a reflection of that connection.

A single image, shared across thousands of people, on the same day her legacy was permanently placed into the foundation of the city.

A statue that will stand for generations.

And a moment that will be remembered just as long.

Together, they tell the same story.

Greatness, recognized.
