I tried lots of new techniques on this piece including using spray paint and stencils on the background (of course Kevin Durant was drawn entirely with a pencil). What do you think? Do you like the colored background?

Getting the first layer of shading added to Kevin Durant’s right arm. ✏️🏀🔫

Back in the studio and made a bit more progress on my piece of Kevin Durant.
To me, the most challenging part of sports art is the logo and lettering on the jersey since the lines are so crisp and there’s very little margin for error. Did I mention that I love a good challenge? 🤓

ust starting on the base layer of Kevin Durant’s jersey. In order to capture the texture of the fabric, I’ll add several thin layers of shading.
There’s no shortcut to greatness!!

“I’m a basketball player. That’s what I do and what I love, but that’s just not all who I am. I’m talented in a lot of different areas.” – Kevin Durant

Got the base layer of shading added. Now I’ll start adding the REAL details!

I still remember the Sonics draft party when we selected Kevin Durant. The was an electricity in the air that we just landed a player who was undeniably going to change the direction of the franchise, and all of us Sonics employees couldn’t have been more excited! One the many great memories I have during my five years with the team.
So, I had to create a drawing to remind me of that magical time! I’m just getting started by getting the piece roughly sketched out. Still a looooong way go!

Back in the studio working on something new! One of my goals for 2019 is to continue pushing myself to grow artistically. To me, that growth comes from taking on new, unexplored – and at times scary – challenges that you’re sure that you can pull off. This is definitely one of those challenges!! In this piece, I initially sketched out the figure that I want to drawing. Then then masked the figure with tape, and painted the background with 24kt gold paint. I then painted a very subtle pattern in the background – also in 24kt gold – which can only be seen when viewed at a certain angle (within the “shine” of the background). To be honest, I have no idea what I’m doing! On one side there’s a bit of fear and apprehension for trying something new that I don’t have full control over. But there’s also a sense of renewed excitement and anticipation within the creation process because I’m not really sure how this will turn out. Well, there’s no reward without risk! Here goes nothing!
