Final drawing: “Zara Larsson.” 15” x 22”. Pencil on paper.

Had so much fun creating this piece of Zara. Definitely one of my favorite drawings. Now, time to ship it off to its new owner in Sweden!

Adding the dark background (which takes a looooong time when you’re filling it in with needle-tip graphite!). Once complete, I’ll go back through the entire piece one more time and add all of the finest details.

Up close and personal! Got most of Zara’s neck piece completed, and now going back to refine her hair with more detail.

I want to get all of the metal leaves and links laid out, and then I’ll go back and add more detail and really make them shine! ✏✨😎

Still building up layers of shading within the metal leaves around Zara’s neck. Some of these leave will be drawn as blurred (on the edges) where as others will have sharp detail.

The metal leaves around Zara’s neck are actually quite detailed. Just added the second layer of shading to this section of the neck piece, which is starting to give the the drawing a whole new level depth. More to come!

Sketching out this crazy neck piece on Zara. It looks like hundreds of metal leaves stacked on top of each other. The shine and texture will contrast nicely with her skin. Just wait! ✏😎

Tightened up the skin texture of Zara’s face, and also added a bit more detail to her hair.

Starting to add the texture to Zara’s skin. I begin with a very light layer of shading and then use an eraser to remove some of the graphite, and then blend it out. After repeating this process several times there should be a nice, lifelike texture to her skin.

Added another layer of shading to @zaralarsson’s face, but still keeping it pretty rough at this point. Will refine the shading and add more detail as I progress further.

Got most of @zaralarsson’s face mapped out, and now getting the rough placement of various strands of hair.

I approach my drawings similar to a painter in that I lightly block out key areas of the piece, and then use those areas as a map as I work my way around.

I can already tell that her hair is going to be challenging… but that’s the fun part, right?? Get outside your comfort zone and try something that you’re not sure if you can accomplish. Even if you don’t succeed on your first try, take what you’ve learned and try again. Eventually you’ll succeed! Unfortunately most people give up too soon. Don’t be THAT person! If you want something, go get it! Embrace the challenges and learn to enjoy the process!!! I know I do!
