16 Jul Final drawing: The Huddle (Seahawks LOB)
Final Drawing: The Huddle. 15” x 23”. Pencil on paper. Prints are now available.
I can confidently say that this is the best drawing I’ve ever done, and is also my highest commissioned piece ($4k), which I plan to use towards an upcoming charity project.
This piece challenged me in so many ways.
For starters, this the most ambitious composition that I’ve ever attempted. There are eight players in this piece, and nearly the entire image consists of ultra-high detail.
Needless to say, this piece took a lot of time to complete. I spent over 60 hours on it (an all time high for a single piece), which truly tested my own patience.
But the bigger challenge was adding/removing players. I changed a few of the players in the back row. But by far the toughest was moving Earl Thomas to the front. Since I didn’t have an image to reference, I had to largely improvise. His tattoos were particularly difficult considering that I had to imagine how they’d look on his arm at that specific angle, and with the intense lighting. With all these changes, this “new” image is a true original.
The last element that I added was the grass. I literally tried to draw every single blade. This area alone took over six hours to complete. I had to press relatively hard with my pencil for the entire time, which was actually a bit painful (my thumb was partially numb for two days). But, in the end, it was well worth it when I see the added depth created by the grass. It’s really takes the piece to the next level.
Although I’m happy with this piece, I feel like I’m still learning… and improving. Each of my drawings has been better than the previous, but I still feel like I have a lot more to learn.
I plan to keep pushing myself to get better. To never settle for “good enough.” To continue working towards becoming the best artist that I can be. #DreamBig
And a special shoutout to all the Seahawks who have supported me! Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman and Tye Smith and the Seahawks! Really appreciate it! 🙏
