TRUE LOVE

The making of…

A post shared by Keegan Hall (@keegan.hall) on

Final drawing: “True Love.” 11” x 22”. Pencil on paper.

In the picture (right side) you can see Gov Insee presenting the drawing to President Obama (this is only pic I have now, but I’ll get others soon). The President also immediately recognized the “moment” that I drew, and was blown away by the level of detail. He kept commenting on how real the drawing looked (much of the fine details aren’t visible in photos of the drawing). That’s pretty much the best reaction I could ever hope for!

Attached to the back of the frame is a letter (pic on the upper left) that includes this quote: “Happy is the man who finds a true friend, and far happier is he who finds that true friend is his wife.” – Franz Schubert

Also included is a short biography about me (with my contact info) and, most importantly, a note about the significance of this piece: “This pencil art was create for President Barack Hussein Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to thank them for their service on behalf of all Washingtonians. While the legacy that is left in history will be remembered for the sacrifices and deeds accomplished, it is your love and commitment that will be forever remembered by those whose hearts you have touched.”

To say that I’m honored to create a piece on behalf of all Washingtonians is understatement. Since returning to art, I’ve done my best to represent our state both in-person and across the “global village” that is social media. It’s truly unbelievable to be recognized on this level, and I’m so grateful.

I can’t wait to learn where this piece will be displayed. Since it’s an “official” gift from the State of Washington, it can only end up in one of two places: in the Obama’s family home (one his final term has concluded) or at the new Obama Presidential Library that is currently being built in Chicago.

So, if you you visit the library and don’t see my drawing then you’ll know where it is!

Not gonna lie… I considered removing the bracelets from this drawing. They’re so tiny and have a ton of intricate detail. It would have made the drawing so much easier to not drawing them at all, and no one would have noticed.

But it’s details like this that can take the drawing to the next level, and I’m always up for a good challenge.

I still want the focal point to be Michelle Obama with the President, Barack Obama, being secondary. But, once the viewer absorbs these two figures and their eye begin to wander to other elements on the page, I really want the bracelet to stand out as an understated highlight of this piece.

Barack’s hair is much more detailed than one might expect. There are so many subtle changes in value for each hair. It easy to get lost, but I’m visually breaking the hair into different sections do I can accurately drawing exactly what I see.

Capturing the skin accurately is so critical. I just added the first layer of shading to President Barack Obama. It’s tempting to omit wrinkles and blemishes, but it’s those imperfections that truly bring the drawing to life.

Being constantly in the global media spotlight, it’s easy to forget that, yes, even the President and First Lady are people too.

I really want to focus less on their status as the most powerful couple in world and, instead, try to capture the universal feeling of love that we can all relate to.

After all, it’s moments like these that make life worth living.

I’m sure President Barack Obama has seen MANY portraits of himself over the years, and I knew I didn’t want to simply draw a static image of him looking back at the viewer.

Instead, I wanted to draw something truly meaningful that would make him smile each time sees it.

Which person has had the largest impact on his life – both personally and professionally?

The answer is quite simple: his wife, Michelle Obama.

Behind every good man is an equally good (if not better!) woman. I know that’s true for me (in my case, she’s better!). I searched through hundreds of images of Michelle Obama, but couldn’t find the “one” that spoke to me.

So I had to combine a few and create my own.

This scene is from the Inaugural Ball in 2013. I really wanted to frame Michelle as the focal point in this piece while also instilling a sense of love into the composition.
I have the base layer of shading completed. Lots more detail to come.
